What it Means to be AV Peer Review Rated on Martindale-Hubbell®
The Martindale-Hubbell® PEER REVIEW RATINGS™ are an indicator
of an attorney's high ethical standards and professional ability.
The ratings are generated from evaluations of lawyers and other members
of the bar and the judiciary in the United States and Canada. An attorney
receives his or her first review approximately three years after their
admission to the bar.
LexisNexis conducts secure online Martindale-Hubbell® PEER REVIEW RATINGS™
surveys of attorneys across multiple jurisdictions and nationwide, in
similar areas of practice to the attorney who is being rated. Those surveyed
are asked to assess their colleagues' general ethical standards, as
well as their legal ability in a specific field of practice. Once the
ratings have been assigned, they appear in the Martindale-Hubbell®
Law Directory and various other sources.
The Martindale-Hubbell® Peer Review Ratings™ indicate a combination
of achieving Very High ethical standards and a Legal Ability numeric rating.
In order to achieve a certain rating, a specified number of responses
must be obtained. Those attorneys who meet the "Very High" criteria
of the General Ethical Standards are thrust into the next step in the
rating process – Legal Ability.
The Legal Ability ratings are based on the attorney's performance in
five areas which are rated on a scale of 1 to 5 (with 1 being the lowest
and 5 being the highest). The five key areas are:
- Legal Knowledge
- Analytical Capabilities
- Communication Ability
- Legal Experience
The AV® Preeminent™ (4.5-5.0) rating is the highest rating an
attorney can achieve. Not only is the AV® Preeminent™ rating
a significant accomplishment, it illustrates the fact that the attorney's
peers rank him or her at the highest level of professional accomplishment
